Careers Guidance and Work Experience

We encourage students to participate in work experience to gain transferable skills and to gain experience if they are considering a particular vocation. Year 12 has an annual week of work experience and students are offered other opportunities – such as access days, virtual workshops and talks – to learn about a variety of careers. In Year 12, students also take part in an off-timetable careers day where a variety of speakers from a range of employment backgrounds present information on their industry to the students. Recently this has included representatives such as a marketing director from Amazon, a senior engineer working on HS2, a senior civil servant, the head of broadcast and entertainment at Google, the director of market technology for Morgan Stanley,  the CEO of Spotify Europe, a lawyer from Dentons, a producer for a London theatre company, a fashion buyer, an animator and a games developer for example. We also run a careers lunch on the last Friday of each half term, this provides an additional opportunity for students to discuss their future options with a dedicated careers advisor.

Preparation for Higher Education

Students are well supported with their higher education and career decision-making through a visit to a University Convention at the Excel Centre and three dedicated UCAS, apprenticeship and careers days running between June in Year 12 and November in Year 13.  These are opportunities that give students the chance to engage face to face with employers and representatives from colleges and universities. Parents and students are also invited to attend our UCAS, apprenticeships and careers evening and our Student Finance evening.  Our Sixth Form tutors offer valuable support to students on the application process as well as feedback on their Personal Statements. Two dedicated UCAS tutors also support students with the finetuning of Personal Statements. All students will discuss each element of their application with a senior member of staff before their application is finalised and sent off to UCAS. Our Careers Advisor is also available to support students with applications for apprenticeships and the world of work.
