English at Ashlyns School: The English Faculty is responsible for English, English Language, English Literature and Film Studies across GCSE and English Literature, English Literature and Language, Film Studies and Sociology at AS/A2 level. The faculty consists of several experienced colleagues, many of whom are, additionally, external examiners, as well as relatively recently qualified colleagues.
English at Ashlyns has additional resources and learning and teaching approaches which effectively cater for successful delivery of a broad, rich KS3 curriculum and the GCSE specification. The knowledge and skills taught across KS3 using a wide variety of material and texts to ensure students develop both as readers and writers in preparation for delivery of the AQA specification at KS4. This in turn prepares students for delivery of the Eduqas specification at A level English Literature and the AQA specification of A level English Language and Literature, where in both subjects results are excellent.
Years 9 to 11 are arranged in sets across two half-year bands; students in Years 7 and 8 are taught in mixed ability groups. Setting can be flexible in response to the particular characteristics and needs of specific year groups and the ideal balance is always reviewed to create the best learning environment and the best outcomes in terms of results. There are usually at least two English Literature or English Language and Literature groups in both Years 12 and 13 as the subject is consistently extremely popular.
Colleagues teach across the full age and ability range and are well supported within the Faculty from taking up their post and throughout their ongoing career with us. We benefit from generous Teaching Assistant provision from Inclusion with whom we liaise closely in planning lessons and resources.
Extra curricular opportunities are well developed with the Faculty; we work extremely closely with the LRC who run fantastic clubs and events throughout the year. The Faculty also runs frequent theatre trips and helping with Reading groups for all abilities. The Faculty is a hard working and friendly team where new colleagues are always made warmly welcome.
