Travel

We are committed to ensuring that everyone travelling to and from Ashlyns can do so as safely as possible. We encourage students, staff and visitors to use environmentally friendly modes of transport and believe this contributes to the health, safety and developing independence of our students and good relationships with our neighbours.

In April 2023 Ashlyns received a Bronze level Modesift STARS accreditation for our efforts to increase levels of walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel by delivering a Good Travel Plan that includes a range of sustainable travel initiatives.

We are keen to receive any relevant feedback and knowledge from our school community relating to travel and traffic around our school. Please complete this form if you would like to communicate any information to us: Travel and traffic feedback form.

Travelling by Bus

Little Jim’s bus 502 operates a journey at 07:58 hours from Dudswell (via Northchurch, Durrants Farm Estate and Berkhamsted High Street)  to Ashlyns School.  Returns from outside the school at 15:34 hours.

500 Arriva bus service travels along the High Street and is used by students from Tring and Hemel Hempstead, who then walk up the hill to the school.

354 Red Eagle bus service from Berkhamsted to Chesham stops on Chesham Road outside the school.

Barnetts Bus Service Barnetts Coaches provide a daily service from Chipperfield and Bovingdon to Ashlyns School. If you would like your child to use this service, please contact Barnetts directly for further details: https://www.barnettscoaches.co.uk/schools. Please note that this is not a school bus and Ashlyns has no responsibility for home to school transport.

Travelling by Train

London Northwestern railway service runs from Euston to the North of England and stops at Berkhamsted station in the town centre.

Travelling by Bicycle

The school has a cycle rack to store bicycles securely, together with lockers for the storage of helmets and other accessories. A padlock is required for secure storage.

Travelling by Car

Students should only travel by car if necessary – please consider driving your child for part of the journey, allowing them to feel the benefits of walking to school and to reduce congestion around busy areas.

Visitors:  if you are using a Satnav please enter the postcode HP4 3AE rather than the school’s main postcode HP4 3AH, in order to reach our main entrance.

If you are coming from the A41

Take the Chesham turnoff from the A41 ( Berkhamsted bypass ).  Take the first exit from the roundabout heading towards Berkhamsted town.  At the next roundabout, take the second exit and you will see the school approximately 200 yards on the right.

If you are coming from Berkhamsted High Street

From the High Street, look for the Swan Centre by the pelican crossing, and turn into Chesham Road (one-way road) for approximately half a mile.  Cross over the junction and the entrance to Ashlyns School is on the left-hand side.

Car Parking

There are currently 250 parking spaces distributed between three areas of the school grounds. Half of the front car park is dedicated to visitor car parking during normal school hours. Visitors are requested to report to the main reception area and sign in.

There are also dedicated disabled parking spaces at the front of the building together with disabled access.

Car Parking for School Events

When there are after-school events, such as parent or information evenings and concerts, additional parking at the rear of the school is available in the staff car park or adjacent playground which is used as an overflow car park. For ease of traffic flow and to conserve the site, we request that parents and visitors do not park on the driveway, perimeter road or any grassed areas.

Delivery and Collection from School

School buses park outside the school entrance to drop off and collect students. The school has a turning circle outside the front entrance where parents and taxis drop students in the morning and wait along Chesham Road to collect them in the afternoon.  Parents are encouraged not to take their children into the school grounds in the mornings or after school.  The school operates a one-way system around the perimeter road with a 5mph speed limit.

Sixth Form Drivers

Sixth-form students who use their own motorcycles/cars to travel to school are required to have permits and provide proof of their insurance. They are allowed to park in the car park at the rear of the school.
