Welcome to the Modern Languages Faculty at Ashlyns.
To have a second language is to possess second soul Charlemagne
We are a vibrant and exciting faculty which prides itself in offering all our students the best opportunities and experiences in learning languages. We play a key role in supporting the National Languages Strategy, which aims to transform the country's capability in languages by encouraging 'languages for all: languages for life'.
We aim to provide young people with the skills needed to progress into employment, further training or higher education according to their individual needs.
Good communication skills are paramount in the modern world and here at Ashlyns we are in a strong position to meet these challenges by producing students who are competent linguists, offering opportunities to study French, Spanish and Italian.
We aim for language learning to be fun and believe it will offer our students an excellent insight into other cultures as well as offer knowledge and understanding of the role we play in the international dimension.
Our Language College specialism, held since 2003, has allowed us to promote languages not only within our own school but also as part of our community outreach work and in 2011 the school was awarded the prestigious Full International School Award by the British Council in recognition of this work.
Educational visits and exchanges play an important part in broadening our students' horizons and every year many of our students participate in language events, in this country and overseas. We currently run a French study visit as well as Spanish and Italian exchanges.
Currently, on arrival from their feeder school, all students continue their study of French in Year 9 and they are introduced to Spanish as a second foreign language.
In Year 10 and Year 11 the majority of students are encouraged to study GCSE French or Spanish though some students opt to continue with both languages at Key Stage 4. Italian GCSE is also currently offered as an option in Year 10.
At Key Stage 5 French, Spanish and Italian AS and A2 are offered as part of the Sixth Form curriculum.
Visit the Languages VLE area to view course specifications, a full range of resources, websites, revision materials and language topics.
